Your curl pattern is what your hair looks like after it dries naturally without heat. It is possible to have more than one curl pattern on your head. But factors like follicle porosity, density, and texture also affect your hair.

Or, try heatless methods using foam rollers or scrunching, braiding, or twisting your hair. When we compared the side of our hair with heat protectant to the side without, we noticed the protected side was noticeably smoother, shinier, and silkier. This product also passed both of our efficacy tests with flying colors. When we used hot tools, we didn’t notice any burning, sizzling, hissing, or smell of heat. We sprayed a paper receipt with the product, and there were no signs of burning after a quick pass with a flat iron.

Contrary to popular belief, curly hair isn't just one giant category. For starters, there are different types of curls—from 2a to 4c—and each has its own set of unique characteristics and traits. It takes a bit of exploration, and since our hair may transform over time, it also takes patience and kindness to your curls. Type 2C waves are usually identified as small to medium size waves that form into a letter S shape as they grow. Though for some this may already look like a typical curly hair, the 2C type does not form springs, a distinguishing feature between waves and curls. Coconut oil is this leave-in conditioner’s secret ingredient, working to detangle and hydrate.

Type 4a

The formation of your hair comes from your DNA and cannot change, even with temporary hair treatments. Styling curly hair is one thing—identifying your curl type is a whole other ball game. While it can seem intimidating at first, figuring out your curl type is actually pretty easy when it is broken down into this unofficially official guide to curly hair. "Pineappling" is a technique in which the hair is loosely gathered at the highest point of the head, usually before sleep. This protects the curl pattern while helping your hair maintain natural volume while also preventing excessive bedhead.

Using hot rollers

We compared the heat protectant side to the side without heat protectant throughout the drying and styling process. We love the CHI Total Protect Defense Lotion because it didn’t leave our thick hair feeling greasy, dry, or weighed down. Key ingredients include silk to lock in moisture and create shine, vitamin E to prevent color fading, and UV absorbers to protect against the sun. Plus, it passed both of our efficacy tests, so we feel confident that it protects against high temperatures. Keep in mind that Olapex recommends blow drying your hair 75% of the way before using this product. Because of that, and since it’s designed for the roots only, you may want to invest in another heat protectant for the rest of your hair.

Overall, this product stood out as something we could use every day; nothing dramatic, but it provides consistent results. The product comes out of the pump nicely and can be easily distributed with your hands. Cream products are known to linger, and we definitely felt like we needed to wipe our hands off after applying.

Type 1 (Straight)

Below, we’re sharing three different tutorials on curling hair, courtesy of Christine Thompson, co-founder of Spoke & Weal and celebrity hairstylist Nunzio Saviano. One method will give you loose, beachy waves and the other will create tighter ringlets. Once you master these techniques, we even have a tutorial to create effortless-looking waves using a flat iron (yes, really!). When it comes to ingredients, Hatcher says to keep your long-term hair goals in mind. For long and strong hair, she recommends amino acids like taurine and creatine. For gray hair that feels dry and coarse, look for marula oil or argan oil (which can be found in the Briogeo Farewell Frizz Blow Dry Perfection & Heat Protectant Crème).

This texture can get dry, so look for curl gels that have humectants, like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and aloe vera to attract moisture. Type 3 curly hair can range from loose, buoyant loops to tight, springy corkscrews which have some shine. If you're having a hard time keeping your curls in check in humid weather, never fear.

You can usually find her sorting through piles of beauty products — and testing the best ones on camera. After washing, use a liberal amount of leave-in moisturizer, such as the Bread Beauty Hair Cream to add even more moisture. Castor oil is also a great hydrator and sealant for this very dry texture; we like the SheaMoisture 100% Pure Jamaican Black Castor Oil. To maintain those bouncy springs, simply spritz your hair with a curl refresher, like the Carol's Daughter Hair Milk Nourishing & Conditioning Refresher Spray.
